Are you being honest with yourself?
The person you are today is the sum of every single one of your past actions. Your unique experiences, emotions, obstacles, and victories have led you to this very moment.
That can be a great thing — or it can be a not so good thing.
You see, many of us don’t realize that the things we do on a day-to-day basis are simply habits and routines that have developed over time, often through the opinions and wishes of others. They are unconsciously keeping us stuck in old molds of ourselves rather than helping us move toward our dream lives.
Think about these scenarios and see if you can relate…
- You purchase a high-performance planner because you saw an influencer using it on Instagram
- You start waking up earlier and create an entirely new morning routine because your best friend encouraged you to
- You join Clubhouse and soak in all this information from experts because you read an article saying that it will help you succeed
- You drink green juice that tastes terrible because the media has said it’s healthy
And the outcome of those actions? Well, essentially, you feel like you’re doing everything right to create success in your life, but you’re not seeing the results you were hoping for.
You’re going through the motions, you’re doing the things, and you still feel unfulfilled. Want to know why that is? It’s because you aren’t living authentically. And at its core, living authentically means that you choose what’s best for you versus what others tell you is best.
Choosing what’s best for you versus others telling you what’s best.
Authenticity means having a keen awareness of who you are and what you stand for, and then expressing yourself honestly and consistently to the world.
The reason why so many of us live our lives differently than that is because it’s much easier for us to stick to the routines and habits that others have crafted for us rather than create something that will truly help us succeed. We are afraid to take a stand for the life we truly want because it might mean disappointing others’ hopes and wishes for ourselves.
Our version of success, health, and even happiness looks different than anyone else’s.
That can be challenging in itself to understand, especially when you add in things like social media and how we are constantly getting flooded by what we “should” be doing rather than focusing on what we want to do.
Now, we’re not saying that following a morning routine or buying a planner is hurting you, or won’t assist you in taking steps toward your ultimate goal. What’s hurting you, though, is basing your life, your purchasing decisions, and your happiness on what other people are telling you and what they are doing in their own lives.
They aren’t you! You aren’t them!
In order to feel completely fulfilled and content with your life, you must be willing to stray away from others’ perspectives, opinions, and advice and reach deep inside to find what it is your heart and mind are truly hungry for.
Navigating a life of authenticity
The real secret to living an authentic life is to start with simple steps and to reunite with your body, mind, and soul. And how do you create authenticity? You can begin by:
- Speaking your opinions honestly in a healthy way
- Making decisions that align with your values and beliefs
- Pursuing your passions
- Listening to the inner voice guiding you forward
- Allowing yourself to be vulnerable and open-hearted
- Setting boundaries and walking away from toxic situations
The bottom line is all about trusting yourself and blocking out the outside noise.
Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build a successful business, strengthen your relationship with your partner, make a financial decision — you name it — you won’t be able to accomplish any of these things unless you uncover what’s really keeping you stuck, and you’re the only person that can do this.
So, if the planner, morning routine, and other people’s advice isn’t working, maybe it’s time you address the underlying beliefs, fears, and routines that keep sabotaging your efforts of change.
