When it comes to the picture of success that lives in our minds, most of us tend to focus on the end result – that point in life where we’ve finally reached our destination and “have it all,” so to speak.
It’s only when we take a look at all of the pieces of the puzzle that have to come together for us to reach that level of success that reality starts to set in.
To put it bluntly, we start thinking about all of the different ways we could fail or screw up.
It’s only natural to wonder whether or not there will be bumps in the road (there will), but unfortunately, the fear of hitting those bumps can lead to us giving up on our dreams and goals altogether.
But what if failure is something that has to happen in order for us to really understand where we’re going?
Failure Is Your Best Teacher
The truth is, even the most successful people – the ones you look at and think, “Man! I’d love to accomplish as much as he/she has…” – have had times when they’ve stumbled, fallen, and had to pick themselves back up again and keep going. That’s just human nature.
Even ITN Founder & CEO, Cynthia Garcia, had a session with a client that made her feel like she had failed.
She talked about the experience as a recent guest on the Betty Rocker podcast.
Cynthia was working with a particular client, whom she calls, “Jenny.”
Jenny wanted to lose weight, but every time she met with Cynthia for a session and they went over her meal plan, she had logged Snickers bars several times a day as entries in her food journal.
This happened over and over and over again, which left Cynthia frustrated.
She decided it was time for a little tough love, and she told Jenny that if she didn’t kick the Snickers bars to the curb, then she didn’t know how to help her because she wasn’t helping herself.
Cynthia even went so far as to tell Jenny, “At this point, you’re wasting your money, and you’re wasting my time.”
Jenny’s response left Cynthia speechless and feeling like she’d failed – though it also led to her big “a-ha” moment, which you can hear in this excerpt from the podcast.

Instead of letting what happened with this client get the best of her, Cynthia viewed the experience as teaching her an important lesson, which just so happened to be the lesson that changed everything and inspired her to come up with the idea of Transformational Nutrition.
“We are fed by so much more than what’s on our plate.”
Don’t Be Afraid of Failure
If Cynthia hadn’t “failed,” when she did, she may never have gone on to create the Transformational Nutrition model of coaching, and who knows? ITN might not even exist today.
(Ok, so it probably would, given Cynthia’s commitment to helping others transform their lives. But you get the drift.)
Sometimes in life, we need to have these moments that break us open and force us to look at the bigger picture so that we can learn, adjust, grow, and move forward towards the success we desire.
If the fear of failure or not doing everything perfectly right off the bat has been holding you back from taking a chance and pursuing your dream of having success on your own terms, then let this serve as a reminder that sometimes messing stuff up is what leads to having a big epiphany that changes the game from that point forward.
