I sat in silence for thirty hours last month, and I have to say I LOVED it!
What if I told you that your life could be transformed just by sitting in silence for one hour each day?
Does the thought of silence make you feel scared, stressed, or bored? Or, maybe a combo of all three? I hear ya loud and clear, friend!
I’ll be honest — these were my initial thoughts until I tried it for myself.
For someone who is a major busy body, like me, slowing down can be hard. (Really hard!)
Even early in the morning, when much of the world is still asleep, I am focused on getting in my workout or jumping right into my emails.
Until I fully practiced silence, I was in constant go mode.
We may think we don’t have time to do something like this, but the reality is that we don’t have time not to.
Not only did my fears and judgments start working themselves out on my very first day, but I was literally blown away by the results!
A SIMPLE MEDITATION APPROACH
I had not only found my new favorite way to meditate, but this type of meditation was downright simple!
As simple as finding a quiet place, getting comfy, and allowing yourself to JUST BE.
That’s it! There was no worrying about if I was doing it right — no overthinking it! Just sitting quietly and allowing my thoughts to surface and release.
If you have struggled with mediation in the past, you must try this!
I promise you are not only going to love it, you may even find that it is hard to live without.
If 30 days is too long of a commitment, try it for seven days and see what happens!
Not convinced? Here are the 5 things I learned during my 30 days of silence that might entice you to give it a try too!
5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM SITTING IN SILENCE
1. MINIMIZED STRESS
Silence gave me a calm mind which led to a calm body, less tension, and as a result, less stress! (Yes, please!)
The only way to describe it is an overall feeling of zen, which lasted well past my 1-hour session each morning.
In our modern world, you are inundated with information and stimulation. Think about it — most of the time you are either on your phone, busy on the computer, or zoned out watching TV.
Or, maybe all three at the sample time! Even when you may have a moment of rest throughout the day, in reality, you have tasks and to-dos you are thinking about.
Sitting in silence allows you to slow down, find calmness, and have time with just yourself.
2. BOOSTS COGNITION
My attention improved! (Who wouldn’t like that?)
I like to think that I have a good attention span, but let’s be real. (Squirrel!)
There are moments when my thoughts are scattered, and I find it hard to concentrate on what I am working on. I also find it hard, at times, to focus on simple things like playing with my son — due to my mind constantly wandering.
Getting quiet has allowed the noise in my mind to quiet down and give me the capacity to be fully present in each moment throughout the day.
3. IMPROVES VISUALIZATIONS
My visualizations became stronger!
I like to practice visualization exercises for achieving my goals and dreams. However, I have always found it really hard to get through a visualization without my mind straying. (Can you relate?)
Not anymore! Since practicing silence this last month, I have found my visualizations to be much more vibrant and clear!
4. BOOST CREATIVITY AND PRODUCTIVITY
My creativity surged, and so did my productivity!
This last month ideas have flown to me freely and effortlessly! I have found it easier to stay on task and accomplish what needs to be accomplished in a day with much less effort and struggle.
I also am enjoying the process of creativity and productivity much more!
5. HELPS TO ELIMINATE MEMORY PATTERNS
Most importantly, I learned to finally allow thoughts that were constantly circling in my mind to surface instead of pushing them off to deal with another day.
When you are sitting in silence and a thought pops into your mind, it is much harder to ignore it and push it away.
I found that many of my thoughts were things that kept me identifying with an old story or things that made me feel unworthy and unloved.
I also noticed certain judgments that I held about myself and the world. Letting go of thoughts and beliefs that are holding us hostage is one of the most freeing things we can do through our silence practice.
READY TO GIVE IT A TRY?
If you are a seasoned meditator or have never tried meditation before, commit to at least one hour of silence for the next seven to thirty days.
One hour each day may sound like a lot, but I promise that one hour will pay you back in so many ways!
