3 Tips For Becoming A Corporate Wellness Coach

What if there was an untapped market in your city filled with a captive audience in need of your services?

Imagine a steady stream of clients and a booked calendar. (Anyone interested?!)

What about getting your message out into your community in a bigger way? And even better, what if you could create an additional revenue stream for your business.

Intrigued? (Cue the drum roll please!)

Small and medium size businesses are the untapped market in your area for you as a Health Coach!

Corporate wellness is a hot topic in the business world and provides a unique opportunity for Health Coaches, like you!

Did you know that we spend one-third of our lives at work? Yikes!

That’s why companies are seeking out wellness programs and solutions that help address topics like mental health and opioid addiction.

According to an article on Business Insurance, 75% of U.S. employers are impacted by the current opioid epidemic; however, only 17% of those employers feel that they are prepared to handle the issue.

That means that the employees of these organizations need Health Coaches who can help get to the root cause of their stress and other health issues.

MY STORY

I left my 15-year advertising career because the burnout and stress took a toll on my health.

I wish I would have had access to corporate wellness programs during these 15 years, but the good news is that it’s now more common to have programs in the corporate space these days.

Here’s even better news; this demand for wellness programs creates a growth opportunity for you and your business!

MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE

As a graduate of ITN, I learned a valuable lesson that stuck with me as I dove head first into the corporate wellness world.

“You need to meet people where they are at in the here and now.”

In corporate wellness, there are many strategic roads you can take to work with a business and its employees.

A common mistake health coaches make is to use their own coaching programs, the ones that they use every day with their clients.

Sorry to break it to you, but most of the time this approach falls flat on its face!

If you want to succeed in the corporate wellness space, this is a scenario you may run into. Let’s say your focus is chronic disease prevention; however, their immediate need is someone to help with ergonomics and stress management.

You can still help! You have to position yourself as a person who is adaptable and flexible.

All you need to do is to create workshops and programs tailored to their specific needs.

Even though the topic is different, you can still utilize your knowledge base and practice to put together their workshop.

(Pro Tip: Include other experts like naturopaths or chiropractors to create a more interactive workshop and increase the value you bring to the table.)

It’s all about giving them what they want so you can show them what they need. If you do, your business, cash flow, and impact will grow exponentially!

3 TIPS FOR BECOMING A CORPORATE WELLNESS HEALTH COACH

Many coaches who reach out to local businesses get discouraged easily.

Why? Because they give up too soon! Don’t fall into that trap!

You may speak with ten organizations before you get your chance. (Trust me on this!) It takes determination and persistence, like anything in business, to start to see progress.

One of the easiest ways to get your foot in the door is to do free workshops or lunch and learns.

Here are three tips for getting started in the corporate wellness space!

1. UTILIZE FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Do you have clients, friends, or family members who work at a local business?

Congrats, you have an ‘in’!

Ask them if they would be willing to make a simple introduction, via e-mail, to someone in their Executive or Human Resources department, preferably someone who makes the decisions.

Tip: As a “thank you” for making the introduction, offer that person a discount on their next session or show them gratitude in a fun, creative way! Need ideas? Check out this article 16 Creative Ways To Create Client Loyalty.

Utilize Friends And Family

2. GET IN TOUCH

Once the introduction is made, the next step it to set-up a phone call or in-person meeting.

The goal of that meeting is to simply listen. Ask questions, and find out about their company, employees, as well as their goals and objectives.

You want to know their history with wellness programs, so think about questions such as:

  • Have they ever done a wellness program before? If so, what did they do?
  • What were the results?
  • What did they like or not like about the program?

This is not a time to be salesy or make the meeting about you. It’s about playing detective and discovering what’s going on within the walls of the company!

Get In Touch

3. MAKE AN OFFER

If it seems like a good fit for both parties, ask if they would be willing to let you do a free workshop or lunch and learn series on topics that are of most interest to the employees.

You can list a few topics; however, mention that you would be willing to speak on what will most benefit the organization and its employees.

This is a great first step because it allows them an opportunity to get to know you with little commitment, and at the same time, will allow you to get more information about the organization straight from the source — the employees.

Once you do get your foot in the door, your goal is to create a long-term relationship.

This is not about doing one workshop or creating a 3-month program and then leaving. Your goal should be to work with them for the long haul.

Make An Offer

IN CONCLUSION

Businesses are an untapped market for health and wellness coaches.
Why? Because businesses are looking for creative ways to save money on their overall health care costs.

They are determined to create a healthier, happier, and more productive workforce. To do that, they need to take their employees’ health and needs seriously.

This is where you come in!

You can be an advocate for both the business and the employees.

Corporate wellness is a great way to grow your business; and more importantly, it’s an opportunity to get in front of a group of people that desperately need to hear your passion, purpose, and story.
